During its 21 January 2025 meeting, Burlescombe Parish Council approved a significant increase in the annual precept, nearly tripling it from £12,049.69 last year (See: Website) to £34,325 – a rise of 184.89%.
The rise will impact local taxpayers, with Band D properties now expected to pay £90.13 per year, compared to £31.65 last year.
Reasons for the Precept Increase
In a statement (See: Website), the council outlined several key factors contributing to the significant precept increase:
- Parish councils are expected to hold up to a year’s precept in reserves (See: Website) to cover maintenance of assets, election costs, and other expenses.
- The £5,000 cost of the June election, triggered by vacancies created after the resignation of the previous Parish Council and Clerk, contributed to the need to raise the precept, as the election was contested with nine candidates standing for seven seats (See: Website).
- Another election (See: Website) for the current vacancy, requested by parishioners, could result in similar costs if contested.
- Essential maintenance for Westleigh Playpark, which is coming under the council’s management, is estimated at £6,000. This cost relates to re-fencing the play park (See: Website) area and the recreation ground.
- Rising operational costs and inflation have increased the funds needed to maintain essential services.
The council emphasised that “there is support available for people who can’t afford their Council Tax. Find out more on MDDC’s website https://www.middevon.gov.uk/residents/benefits/council-tax-reduction/.”
